I struggle daily with how to get nutrients into my super fussy 12 year old son who is a competitive athlete. He dives platform and springboard for a team near where we currently live in the UK and he trains 5-6 days a week, including after school sessions that last 3.5 hours. I can only estimate his high caloric daily needs, but do know that getting the right amount and type of calories into to him so that he can grow, train and remain healthy is something I have to strategize daily. So when I found something he likes to have and that has needed protein, fat, carbohydrates, is easy to make, and doesn’t contain any unnatural sweeteners, or other junk I wanted to share it with others. My son says it takes just like a chocolate milkshake! This recipe is adapted from a similar one on Detoxinista’s site, I call it a Protein Power Smoothie. It combines whole fat organic (raw if I can get it) milk, frozen bananas, organic peanut butter, pure cocoa and a teaspoon of coconut oil or ¼ of an avocado. It is simply just a blended together to make a tasty, peanut butter banana smoothie that even the fussiest child should like!
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1-2 Tablespoons cocoa (depending on how strong you like the chocolate flavor)
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 1 1/2 cups whole organic milk
- 1 Teaspoon coconut oil, or if preferred pure maple syrup or raw honey
- 5 ice cubes
- Throw all the ingredients into a high-powered blender, and blend until smooth and creamy.
