I was fortunate to receive a sample of Really Healthy Pasta Buckwheat & Golden Flaxseed Penne.
I was excited to try this organic and gluten free, high fibre product as I love pasta salad and have been reducing white pasta from my diet. As a comparison, I decided to make my Quinoa Greek Salad recipe but with the Really Healthy Pasta instead of the quinoa.
The Really Healthy Pasta was easy to cook. You cook it in simmering water for 4-5 minutes until it is tender but still al dente. I added a bit of sea salt to the water. After cooking, I drained and chilled the pasta while preparing the rest of the ingredients. Once the pasta was cooled completely I mixed everything together and served my toughest critics—two teenagers and my husband.
For a genuine product review I opted not to tell my fussiest eater that this was not traditional pasta. My son is very fussy and reluctant to try new foods and is very discriminating about the texture of foods that he likes. If he was going to notice a difference then I knew this wouldn’t easily become a substitute for our traditional pasta dishes. He took the salad and ate it all without saying a word, and even asked for more when he finished!
Definitely a good sign that he thought the taste and texture were similar to whole grain pasta. The rest of the family enjoyed the salad and found it to be a healthy, organic substitute to traditional pasta. My husband commented that the texture was a bit stickier than whole grain pasta. He also found the flavour a bit ‘bolder’ than whole grain pasta but said that the flavours of this particular recipe enhanced the pasta as it is full of contrasting ingredients.
I was very pleased with this product and will be using it on a regular rotation in our kitchen in lieu of pasta. I will be recommending Really Healthy Pasta to friends and clients in the future.
